Local authorities have not received any response regarding the Kalo Chorio Firing Range, even as the problems arising from its operation were brought before the House Defense Committee, where lawmakers requested a timeline for relocating the firing ranges.
Speaking on the “Alpha Kalimera” program, the Community Leader of Agia Anna, Anastasis Georgiou, stated that “we don’t expect much; that’s what we gathered from the meeting. I think it will be difficult to relocate the shooting range.”
He also emphasized that their demand is for the firing range to be moved “today, not tomorrow. That’s what I told them at the meeting, because we can’t wait any longer.”
As he explained, so far they’ve had two meetings with the Minister of Defense, with whom they discuss safety issues, namely, ensuring that when a fire breaks out, firefighting forces respond as quickly as possible to extinguish it.
Although no further meeting has been scheduled at this time, “they said they would look into finding suitable locations,” Mr. Georgiou stated.
When asked whether he knew that the Chief of the National Guard was at the firing range when the fire broke out in July, Mr. Georgiou stated that “No, we didn’t know that at the time. We heard about it yesterday.”
