His office is preparing a report on pet hotels, the Commissioner for the Environment and Animal Welfare, Ilias Myrianthos, told CNA, adding that it is expected to be ready within the first ten days of September.
Specifically, in response to a question from CNA, the Commissioner noted that on Tuesday he discussed the issue of animal hotels—primarily for dogs— with the veterinary officer seconded to the Office of the Commissioner for the Environment, who will prepare a report detailing the number of boarding facilities, the number of licensed and unlicensed facilities, so that a comprehensive and complete picture can be established to enable the regulation of this activity.
In response to the question of when the report will be ready, he explained that the official in question will be working at his Office only one day a week until September 1. Once she begins working at the Commissioner for the Environment’s Office five days a week after that date, the report is expected to be ready within the first ten days of fall.
When asked if there had been any complaints or reports of animal neglect at pet hotels, he said that since taking office, he has not received any complaints or reports of animal abuse at boarding facilities or pet hotels.
When asked about the most pressing issue currently facing his Office, the Commissioner, after noting that there are many issues, said that one matter of concern is animal shelters.
He added that during his initial meetings with local authorities in Paphos, the promotion of animal shelter operations was discussed. He went on to say that, based on his discussions with the veterinary officer, it appears there are issues in other districts as well. He noted that the Municipality of Nicosia is in a better positionregard to animal shelters, and ways to coordinate the relevant agencies and services should be explored so that the creation and operation of shelters (infrastructure projects) can be set on a path toward implementation.
After explaining that he is still gathering information on the matter, he stated that the issue of animal welfare is a vast spectrum that affects the quality of life for both humans and animals.
