The 47-year-old Turkish Cypriot remains hospitalized in critical condition, on a ventilator, following the brutal attack he suffered in Ayia Napa, with authorities having already arrested three tourists. Speaking on the program “Alpha News,” Police Spokesperson Byron Vyronos clarified regarding the motives behind the incident that there is no evidence to suggest a hate crime.
As Mr. Vyronos stated, “The Famagusta Criminal Investigation Department acted immediately, conducted an investigation, and located these three individuals, who have been arrested.” The three suspects will be brought before the court for the issuance of detention orders, while the claims they made during questioning are currently under review.
Regarding the causes, the Press Spokesperson was categorical: “There is no evidence that this involves any crime related to ethnicity, hate, or anything else. We are evaluating the testimony we have before us,” noting that this is an incident strictly between the parties involved.
At the same time, authorities are examining information suggesting that the suspects or the victim may have been under the influence of substances, with Mr. Vyronos confirming that “there is some information (regarding alcohol or drugs) that is being evaluated.”
Regarding the 47-year-old’s status as a resident in the free areas, the police do not yet have a clear picture of whether he was in the area on vacation or for a brief night out. Mr. Vyronos emphasized that the top priority at the moment is the victim’s health, noting: “What is urgent right now is ensuring that his condition is out of danger.”
