Suspicious health centers and alternative therapies: The Ministry of Health has completed its mapping of these facilities

What are the next steps?

The mapping of health centers, which had been ordered by the Minister himself, Neophytos Charalambides, in an effort to clarify the situation regarding those medical facilities across Cyprus that advertise and provide treatments they should not be providing.

Speaking on the issue during the “Alpha Kalimera” program, the Ministry of Health’s press officer, Dimitris Konstantinou, said that the survey has been completed, a report has been prepared, and the Ministry is proceeding with all necessary actions, as the Minister of Health had committed to.

The goal from the outset, as he explained, “was to identify the facilities where invasive treatments and procedures are performed—procedures that should normally take place in settings where patient safety is ensured.”

Information and complaints received by the Ministry of Health, as well as data that was identified online, were used to compile the list of suspected centers in question, while this information continues to come in and is being evaluated by Ministry of Health officials, and where necessary, “the necessary inspections are being carried out.”

The goal, Mr. Konstantinou said, “is to safeguard public health.” Beyond that, he added, “wherever various types of irregularities or practices are identified that should not be carried out at these centers or facilities, the Ministry of Health will issue recommendations to the centers in question to cease providing these treatments, and it goes without saying that we will take the necessary steps, including filing complaints with the police.”

When asked about the status of the complaint regarding a specific center in Larnaca that was allegedly performing plasmapheresis treatments, Mr. Konstantinou said that the specific case is in the hands of the police and that it is up to the police to provide updates on the progress and status of the investigation.
