Clarifications regarding a number of issues outlined in the working paper on the modernization of the education appointment system, which was submitted to them on July 29, 2026, by the Ministry of Education,, Sports, and Youth, during today’s meeting with the Ministry’s political head, Athina Michailidou. At the same time, the organization clearly stated its serious objections to some of the provisions in the text

The OELMEK Executive Committee will meet tomorrow to formally state its position on the Ministry’s working document.

OELMEK President Konstantinos Konstantinou, in statements to CNA and when asked about today’s meeting with the Minister, said that “At today’s meeting with the Minister of Education, we requested clarifications on a number of issues outlined in the working document submitted to us by the Ministry.”

“We received answers to some of these, while on others the Minister committed to responding at a future meeting,” he said.

At the same time, he added, “we clearly articulated our serious objections to some of the provisions in the document.”

“For us, there is one non-negotiable principle: no change to the appointment system can lead to the victimization of teachers. Our colleagues with permanent contracts, contract teachers, and substitute teachers currently serving in schools have supported public education for years; have gained significant educational and teaching experience, and must have a real prospect of continuing their work and becoming permanent employees,” he noted.

Mr. Konstantinou also reiterated OELMEK’s clear position that these teachers must be protected.

“If this cannot be achieved through the new system, then the List of Appointees must be maintained,” he said.

“At the same time, we must also protect those who followed the procedures established by the government itself, took the existing exams, and passed. Changing the rules cannot retroactively nullify the efforts and expectations of people who trusted the system itself,” he added.

Mr. Konstantinou noted that the Minister expressed her willingness to listen to and consider their positions and concerns, and informed them that she would schedule a new meeting very soon.

He added that the OELMEK Central Executive Committee will meet tomorrow to formally take a position on the Ministry’s working document.

“For us, dialogue is not a mere formality. It must be substantive and lead to solutions. We are not opposed to change. We are opposed to any change that creates injustices and leaves teachers without prospects,” he concluded.
