"Pension reform is the most important reform the government is undertaking this year," said the Minister of Labor and Social Security, Marinos Mousiouttas, who noted that “in September, we will submit the bill on the first pillar—the Social Insurance Fund—to the House of Representatives.”
In his remarks at a Music Night event in Agrokipia Square, Mr. Mousiouttas, according to a Ministry press release, said that the key objectives include ensuring adequate pensions so that they are substantially improved.

He added that “the reform brings increases to all pensions, with the greatest support directed where the need is greatest—to our low-income pensioners— in other words, it ensures fairness, so that the burdens and benefits are shared equitably, and sustainability, so that the system remains robust for our children and grandchildren as well.”
As the Minister noted, the same logic underlies the tax reform that took effect on January 1, 2026, which constitutes a fairer system, with a higher tax-free threshold and deductions that truly recognize household expenses, such as children’s education, rent, and loan payments.
“In practice, this means more money where families truly need it,” said Mr. Mousiouttas, noting that educational reform is also part of this same reform framework “with the new system for evaluating teachers and educational work replacing a formal and one-dimensional process with a formative system.”

In closing, the Minister of Labor expressed his pleasure at being in Agrokipia and expressed his hope that the community “continue to be what it is—that is, a village small on the map but great in history, hospitality, and spirit.”
