The current situation in the hotel industry has clearly improved; the industry is feeling the economic impact of the war in the Middle East and the recent drone “attack” on the British Bases at Akrotiri.
Thanos Michaelides, President of the Cyprus Hoteliers Association, explained on the Alpha News program that reservation cancellations are now at the level typically seen every year for the months of July and August, while since May, last-minute bookings have surged sharply from both Cypriots and foreign tourists.
Mr. Michaelides noted that there is significant “room” to limit the damage by the end of the current tourist season, while emphasizing the need for immediate action by the relevant authorities to ensure a satisfactory flow of tourists for the upcoming summer season.
“We are currently signing contracts with travel agents for the upcoming summer season. Therefore, building momentum now will help next year. If we send the message that we have a satisfactory flow of bookings, then confidence for next year will also increase.”
Next Tuesday, Mr. Michaelides’ term as President of the Cyprus Hoteliers Association will come to an end, as he has decided not to seek re-election.
