Cyprus has some of the highest fuel price increases in the EU

An 11.3% increase in diesel prices and a 6.2% increase in gasoline prices in August 2026

An 11.3% increase in diesel prices and a 6.2% increase in gasoline prices were recorded in Cyprus in August 2026 compared to July, according to data published Tuesday by Eurostat.

The increase in gasoline prices in Cyprus was among the highest in the EU in August. Higher increases were recorded in Spain (8.2%), Romania (6.6%), and Italy (6.3%).

As for fuel and lubricant prices on a year-over-year basis in Cyprus, they rose by 19.1%.

Overall, gasoline prices rose between July and August in 22 EU countries, fell in three, and remained stable in the remaining two. Small decreases were recorded in Hungary (-0.6%), Denmark (-0.3%), and Slovakia (-0.1%).

As for diesel, price increases were recorded in 26 EU countries, with the largest increases in the Czech Republic (+14.3%), Bulgaria (+13.5%), and Luxembourg (+12.3%). The smallest increases were recorded in Italy (+5.2%), Romania (+6.1%), and the Netherlands (+6.2%).

At the EU level, in August, consumers saw diesel prices rise by 8.3% and gasoline prices by 3.3% compared to July. The previous month, diesel prices had risen by 4.3% and gasoline prices by 4.7% compared to June.

On an annual basis, Eurostat recorded a 23.8% increase in prices for fuels and lubricants for private transportation in the EU in August 2026 compared to the same month in 2025. This followed increases of 13.7% in June and 16.9% in July.

Fuel and lubricant prices were higher in August in 26 of the 27 EU countries compared to a year earlier. At the same time, the year-over-year increases in August were higher than those in July in 26 countries and higher than those in June in 24 countries.

In 18 member states, the year-over-year increases exceeded 20%. The highest increases were recorded in Bulgaria (+34.5%), Lithuania (+28.8%), Finland (+27.6%), Germany (+27.5%), and France (+27.4%). The lowest increases were recorded in Hungary (+1.3%), Sweden (+6.1%), and Ireland (+11.7%).
