ASET-Cyta: Seeks to overturn the appointment of a member to the new Board of Directors

What the union is advocating for
ALPHANEWSLIVE

The Independent Telecommunications Workers’ Union ASET-Cyta (O.Y.Y.K.-SEK), arguing that in the case of this particular individual, there is a conflict of interest and institutional incompatibility.

In a statement, the union notes that it viewed positively the operation of the Advisory Council for the selection of members to the boards of directors of semi-governmental organizations, noting that the institution’s goal is to select individuals with the appropriate knowledge and experience.

However, he expresses “surprise and many questions” regarding the inclusion of a retired Cyta employee on the organization’s new board of directors, arguing that his case should have been examined more thoroughly by the Advisory Council before the list was submitted to the Council of Ministers.

According to ASET-Cyta, the spouse of the individual in question works at Cyta as a secretary to a senior executive. The union cites Article 3B of the Law of 1988 on Certain Legal Entities under Public Law (Appointment of Boards of Directors) of 1988, arguing that this specific relationship falls under the circumstances that preclude such an appointment.

He further states that the new member of the Board of Directors is an elected member of the Management Committee of the Staff Pension and Benefits Fund, which, as he notes, has a direct relationship with Cyta, and that at the time of submitting his application, he was Vice President of a staff union and a member of its negotiating team.

The union clarifies that its objections do not concern the individual’s qualifications or ability to serve on the Board of Directors, but rather, as it states, issues that, in its view, constitute a conflict of interest.

Based on the above, ASET-Cyta calls on the Council of Ministers and the President of the Republic to revoke the appointment.

At the same time, it requests an investigation into whether the Advisory Council was aware of the facts which, according to the union, rendered the appointment incompatible with the selection criteria and, should any liability be found, that those responsible be held accountable.
