"This is a precautionary measure," the President said

Geopolitical developments in the Middle East and the Black Sea, and their potential impact on supply chains, require increased preparedness and proactive planning; for this reason, the Government is taking steps to secure strategic grain reserves for human consumption, sufficient to cover the country’s needs for a period of 45 days, in addition to and independent of the reserves maintained for commercial purposes, President Christodoulides said on Friday evening.

In his remarks at the event marking the 10th anniversary of the Hatzigiorkis Mills Museum in Frenaros, the President said that the maintenance of these strategic reserves will be entrusted, through open bidding processes, to domestic companies engaged in grain trading and milling. “This is a preventive and preparedness measure, which we hope will strengthen the country’s ability to respond to potential disruptions in the supply of essential goods,” he said.

The President noted that the 55,000 visitors who have passed through the Museum this decade have gained insight into the history of wheat production and milling as it has evolved in Cyprus over the centuries and have enjoyed a unique experience, taking an imaginary journey through the history of our land and the traditions of our people.

He also mentioned the Museum’s participation in the EndlessSun tourism program, organized by the Famagusta Tourism Development Company, which hosts tourists during the winter season.

“There is a clear vision to further highlight our traditions, culinary culture, and intangible cultural heritage, and in this way contribute to the enhancement of our tourism product. And I would like to announce tonight that this ambitious initiative is fully in line with our government’s plans and strategy, and for this reason, we will actively support the project’s funding through the next programming period, 2028–2034,” he said.

He also announced that by September 2027 at the latest, the government will approve projects totaling 3.5 billion euros for the next seven years, 2.5 billion from European funding and 1 billion from national resources.

The President also referred to projects and policies benefiting the residents of the Famagusta region, including through the comprehensive strategic development plan comprising more than 30 projects, totaling 122 million euros.

“This is a priority for our government, taking into account both the challenges and the unique characteristics of the [district]. It is our fundamental obligation to strengthen the economy, improve citizens’ quality of life, and—because the region has significant comparative advantages—to capitalize on those comparative advantages,”, he said.
