The number of trips taken by residents of Cyprus in 2025 for personal and business reasons totaled 3,815,322, compared with 3,366,862 in 2024, according to data published Friday by Eurostat.

At the EU level, residents made a total of 1.20 billion trips in 2025, a 1.4% increase compared to 2024, corresponding to 17 million additional trips.

Of the total, 848 million were trips within the country of residence, accounting for 70% of the total, while 264 million, or 22%, were trips abroad but within the EU. Overall, 92% of trips made by EU residents were to destinations within the Union.

Among the member states, the highest percentages of domestic trips as a share of the total were recorded in Romania at 89%, Spain at 87%, and Greece, France and Portugal, each at 85%.

The lowest share of domestic trips was recorded in Luxembourg, at 5%, followed by Belgium at 29% and Malta at 32%. The remaining 8% of trips by EU residents were to destinations outside the Union, while fewer than half of these took place outside Europe.

Although domestic trips outnumbered international trips, total spending was higher on trips abroad. In 2025, EU residents spent 266.2 billion euros on domestic travel and 379.4 billion euros on travel abroad, according to Eurostat.

For domestic travel, lodging accounted for 34% of total spending, or 90.3 billion euros, and transportation for 21%, or 56.0 billion euros.

For travel abroad, spending on lodging totaled 131.3 billion euros, accounting for 35% of the total, while transportation costs totaled 121.5 billion euros, or 32% of total spending.
