Setting out twelve priorities during a press conference on the budget and inflation, the DISY president strongly criticized the Christodoulides government for its management of the state account’s funds for 2027.
“Inflation is a phenomenon caused by external factors; however, addressing its consequences required specific planning on the part of the government. And it failed to correctly assess the circumstances and adjust its policy accordingly.” Anita Dimitriou, President of DISY
As she points out, the funds should have been channeled toward promoting real reforms, development investments, and targeted and substantive social policies.
“The government chose to inflate inflexible expenditures, implement across-the-board increases, hire more staff, and untargeted measures; a large portion of available resources was channeled to those who need it least.” Anita Dimitriou, President of DISY
The bulk of inelastic expenditures relates to the salaries of employees in the public and broader public sectors.
“In 2022, we had an expenditure of 3.16 billion for the state payroll; now, looking ahead to 2027, that same expenditure has skyrocketed to 4.54 billion.” Savvia Orfanidou, DISY Member of Parliament
“In five years, we’ve seen an increase of 1,380 million euros due to uncontrolled hiring. All of this money should—or should not—have been given to the citizens.” Anita Dimitriou, DISY President
Regarding the passage of the state budget, the president made it clear that DISY will continue the responsible approach it has been following for years.
