The Minister of Labor and Social Security, Marinos Mousiouttas, will present the bill and the government’s proposal for pension reform today to the social partners during a meeting of the Labor Advisory Council.
In remarks to CNA on August 11, Mr. Mousiouttas had expressed the view that, “with good will and a concerted effort from everyone,” the goal of submitting the bill to the first plenary session of the House of Representatives—scheduled for September 20—could be met, so that its debate could begin in the relevant parliamentary committee.
He also emphasized that the Ministry is open to suggestions, provided they align with the bill’s underlying philosophy and do not alter the economic parameters.
The Minister of Labor had expressed his conviction that, once the social partners review the bill, they will realize that the available options are specific and limited, unless proposals are submitted to prioritize certain measures over others.
“I feel, however, that because everyone wants the reform to move forward—and I’m certain of that—we’ll find common ground and move forward,” he said, adding that while there may not be unanimity, he believes it is possible to reach a consensus.
