Total non-performing loans (NPLs) in the Cypriot banking sector stood at €830 million at the end of April 2026, marking a marginal decrease from the €835 million recorded in March, according to data released Thursday by the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC). The NPL ratio remained unchanged at 1.6% of total loans.
Total loans stood at €51.04 billion, compared to €51.35 billion in March. At the same time, loans more than 90 days past due decreased marginally to €633 million from €634 million, remaining at 1.2% of total loans.
Compared to the end of 2025, non-performing loans decreased by €9 million from €839 million.
Total restructured loans amounted to €752 million, down from €777 million in March and €824 million at the end of 2025. Of this amount, €319 million remains classified as non-performing loans.
Total accumulated provisions stood at €650 million, compared to €659 million the previous month, of which €522 million relate to non-performing loans. As a result, the NPL coverage ratio marginally improved to 62.9% from 62.7% in March and 62.1% at the end of 2025.
Higher NPL ratio among households
Based on the analysis by institutional sector, households continue to account for the highest percentage of non-performing loans.
Specifically, out of total loans of €10.74 billion, NPLs amount to €473 million, corresponding to 4.4% of their portfolio. Loans more than 90 days past due total €377 million, while provisions for non-performing loans total €260 million, with a coverage ratio of 55%.
For non-financial corporations, total loans amount to €13.66 billion and non-performing loans to €326 million, with an NPL ratio of 2.4%. Provisions for non-performing loans stand at €232 million, with a coverage ratio of 71.2%.
Particularly among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), non-performing loans amount to €303 million out of total loans of €8.47 billion, with the relevant ratio standing at 3.6%, higher than the banking system average. Provisions cover 71.7% of SMEs’ non-performing loans.
In the sector of other financial institutions, non-performing loans amount to €31 million out of total loans of €2.94 billion, with the NPL ratio limited to 1%, while the coverage ratio stands at 96%.
