The assessment of the damage caused by yesterday’s severe weather has already begun, and the Cabinet will decide on compensation, Minister Konstantinos Ioannou told CNA. He noted that the framework for determining the amount of compensation is based on previous decisions by the Cabinet.
When asked by CNA whether there would be an assessment of the damages and whether compensation from the state is expected, the Minister of the Interior stated that the assessment began on Saturday afternoon in certain areas of the Nicosia district, continues today, and starting Monday, the district administrators’ teams will also go to Chrysokhou and the other districts.
He noted that most of the damage is in the Nicosia District, and that the district offices have already visited various communities to assess the damage. Regarding the other districts, Mr. Ioannou stated that there was no specific damage except for the lightning strike in Avgorou, but repair crews will visit the other districts starting Monday.

When asked about possible compensation from the state, Mr. Ioannou stated that, in cases of natural disasters, there are decisions by the Council of Ministers that provide for certain amounts of compensation for businesses, homes, etc.
“The compensation framework is governed by previous decisions of the Council of Ministers,” he added.
When asked, he said he did not know when the damage assessment would be completed, and that this would depend on the volume of work.
He added that, once the assessment is complete, the matter will be submitted to the Council of Ministers for a decision on compensation and that the framework—based on previous natural disasters—already exists, reiterating that the amount of compensation will be based on previous decisions.
