More than 43,000 new vehicles on Cypriot roads in nine months

A 9.1% increase compared to 2025

Motor vehicle registrations in Cyprus rose by 9.1% during the January–September 2026 period, reaching 43,890, compared to 40,212 during the same period in 2025, according to data released Friday by the Statistical Service. At the same time, the share of hybrid passenger cars rose to 53%, up from 44% the previous year.

According to the Statistical Service’s announcement, in September 2026, total motor vehicle registrations fell by 3.9%, to 5,326, compared to 5,544 in the same month of 2025. Registrations of passenger sedans decreased by 2.5%, to 4,254 from 4,364.

During the first nine months of the year, registrations of passenger sedans increased by 9%, reaching 34,156, compared to 31,325 during the same period in 2025. Of these, 10,521, or 30.8%, were new, and 23,635, or 69.2%, were used. In contrast, registrations of rental cars fell by 17.1%, from 4,559 to 3,780.

In terms of fuel type, the share of gasoline-powered sedans fell to 34.8%, down from 42.8% in the corresponding nine-month period of 2025, while that of diesel-powered cars decreased from 8.5% to 8% and that of electric cars from 4.7% to 4.2%. In contrast, the share of hybrid vehicles increased by nine percentage points, from 44% to 53%.

An increase was also recorded in bus registrations, which totaled 196, compared to 132 during the corresponding period in 2025.

Registrations of freight vehicles increased by 10.4%, reaching 5,046, up from 4,569 the previous year. Specifically, registrations of light trucks increased by 8.8% to 3,970, those of road tractors by 14.7% to 195, heavy trucks by 16.3% to 621, and rental vehicles by 20.9% to 260.

Finally, registrations of motorcycles with engine capacities over 50 cubic centimeters increased by 8% to 3,802, up from 3,522 in the corresponding period of 2025, while registrations of mopeds under 50 cubic centimeters decreased to 109, from 170.
