Discussions are underway on how to offset the rise in fuel prices, given that these are international fuel prices over which no one has control, said Michalis Damianos, Minister of Energy, Trade, and Industry, on Sunday.
In his remarks in Xylotymbou, he emphasized that there are tools that can be utilized to keep fuel costs as low as possible.
“Decisions must be made by September 17,” he said, adding that at some point over the summer, following the relevant discussions, prices had fallen, only to rise again due to the current situation.
He noted that the government has implemented measures to reduce both the cost of electricity and fuel, which remain in effect until September 17.

He further noted that there will be “ups and downs” in prices due to the situation in the Middle East, which, as he said, “no one can control.”
At the same time, he emphasized that the Republic of Cyprus has managed to keep its finances in good shape so that it can contribute by reducing taxes and keeping fuel prices as low as possible.
As he noted, the price of unleaded gasoline and diesel, although still quite high, is at much lower levels compared to other European countries.
In conclusion, he noted that work needs to be done with the companies themselves to keep prices as low as possible, adding that “there are measures” and that “we are heading in the right direction.”
