Finance Minister Makis Keravnos announced a new package of measures to address the consequences of high fuel prices and rising inflation, which will be submitted to the next meeting of the Council of Ministers for approval.
“The goal is always for measures to be targeted, but in cases where that isn’t possible, they take on a broad, across-the-board nature, since some problems affect everyone.”
Following the meeting between the President of the Republic and the leaders of the unions representing hourly-wage workers in the public and semi-public sectors, Mr. Keravnos explained that the government is developing a package of measures to support primarily vulnerable segments of the population and is continuously assessing the situation.
“The government will continue to support all segments of society, especially vulnerable groups, particularly during this period of crisis we are currently facing.”
When asked about the measures taken by the Italian government to combat rising prices by imposing a “ceiling” on retail fuel prices, the Minister of Finance noted that Cyprus has been implementing measures over the past two years that “are far more effective than any taken by any other European country.”
“My assessment is that as Cyprus, an EU member state, with the measures we are implementing and the policies we are pursuing, we have surpassed many other countries, and Cyprus could serve as a model when it comes to measures against inflation.”
Regarding the outcome of the meeting, Mr. Keravnos declined to disclose the content of the discussions, assuring that the government is committed to constructive dialogue to resolve the problems faced by hourly-wage workers in the public sector.
