A humanoid robot developed by the Chinese cell phone manufacturer Honor ran 100 meters in 9.32 seconds, as reported Saturday by China’s state television network, breaking the world record held by Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt.

The robot, named “Lightning,” reached a top speed of 14.5 meters per second during a preparatory test event for the second World Humanoid Robot Games, which began in Beijing on Saturday.

This performance surpassed the world record of 9.58 seconds in the men’s 100-meter dash that Bolt had set at the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin.

China is promoting humanoid robots as a strategic emerging industry, with policymakers and companies betting that advances in artificial intelligence and hardware will accelerate their adoption in industry, logistics, and consumer applications.

The robot “Lightning” also won the 21-kilometer Beijing Half Marathon in April with a time of 50 minutes and 26 seconds, faster than the men’s world record time.

That version of the robot was 169 centimeters tall and had legs 95 centimeters long during the half-marathon. Since then, researchers have lengthened its legs by 10 centimeters, bringing them to 1.05 meters, in preparation for the World Humanoid Robot Games, as reported by China Central Television.
