Employment in the broader public sector during the second quarter of 2026 totaled 78,433 people, an increase of 1,119 people, or 1.4% compared to the corresponding quarter of 2025, according to data released Monday by the Statistical Service.
Of the total workforce, 73,284 were employed in the General Government sector and 5,149 in government-controlled companies and enterprises.
Specifically, the General Government sector recorded 55,372 civil servants, 11,314 employees in nonprofit organizations, and 6,598 employees in local governments.
Compared to the corresponding quarter of 2025, employment in the general government sector increased by 1,009 people (1.4%), with an increase of 293 people (0.4%) in the central government and 716 people (12.2%) in local government.
As noted, the increase in employment in local government is primarily attributable to the District Self-Government Organizations, where employment rose by 416 people (39.1%).
Government-Controlled Companies and Enterprises recorded an increase of 110 people (2.2%).
Compared to the first quarter of 2026, employment in the broader public sector increased by 45 people (0.1%). Employment in General Government increased by 48 people (0.1%), with a decrease in employment in Central Government of 144 people (-0.2%) and an increase in employment in Local Authorities by 192 people (3.0%). In government-controlled companies and enterprises, there was a decrease of 3 people (-0.1%).
