On July 13, 2026, Dr. Andreas Charalambous officially assumed his duties as the new Chairman of the Cyprus Fiscal Council, succeeding Michalis Persianis, as announced by the Fiscal Council on Tuesday.
According to the announcement, Dr. Charalambous is an economist with many years of experience in economic policy and fiscal governance. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Heidelberg (1985).
During his professional career, he served at the Ministry of Finance, where he held the positions of Director of the Directorates of Economic Research and European Union Affairs, as well as Financial Stability. He also served as Chairman of the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission and as Government Commissioner to the Cyprus Stock Exchange.
At the European level, he represented Cyprus on the Economic and Financial Committee (EFC) and the Eurogroup Working Group (EWG). Furthermore, during Cyprus’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2012, she chaired the coordinating committee on ECOFIN matters.
On the occasion of the new leadership taking office, the Fiscal Council expressed its gratitude to the outgoing President, Michalis Persianis, for his contributions and efforts in strengthening the Council’s institutional role.
As stated in the announcement, under the new leadership, the Fiscal Council will remain committed to its mission of ensuring fiscal stability, accountability, and transparency, serving as an independent pillar for assessing the country’s economic performance.
