Unemployment is higher among women in Cyprus: 4.2% compared to 3.7% for men

Close to full employment despite the marginal increase

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in Cyprus stood at 3.9% in July 2026, up from 3.8% in June and 4.3% in July 2025, according to data published by Eurostat on Tuesday.

Eurostat estimates the number of unemployed people in Cyprus at 21,000 in July, compared with 20,000 in June and 23,000 in the same month of the previous year.

The data also show a difference between men and women in Cyprus, as the unemployment rate for men rose to 3.7% in July, from 3.6% in June, while for women it rose to 4.2% from 4.0%. In July 2025, the corresponding rates were 4.1% for men and 4.7% for women.

Regarding youth unemployment among those under 25 in Cyprus, Eurostat does not provide a rate or number of unemployed for July 2026. In June, the youth unemployment rate in Cyprus was 11.9%, with approximately 3,000 unemployed young people, compared to 13.0% and 4,000, respectively, in July 2025.

Unemployment Unchanged in the EU and the Eurozone

At the EU level, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 6.1% in July 2026, unchanged from June and up from 6.0% in July 2025, according to Eurostat. In the eurozone, unemployment also remained unchanged on a monthly basis, at 6.4%, compared with 6.3% in July of the previous year.

Eurostat estimates that 13.516 million people were unemployed in the EU in July, of whom 11.264 million were in the eurozone. Compared with June, the number of unemployed fell by 41,000 in the EU, while it remained unchanged in the eurozone. On a year-over-year basis, however, it increased by 296,000 in the EU and by 175,000 in the eurozone.

Youth Unemployment in the EU at 15.1%

In July 2026, 2.930 million young people under the age of 25 were unemployed in the EU, of whom 2.371 million were in the euro area.

The youth unemployment rate in the EU fell to 15.1% from 15.6% in June, while in the euro area it dropped to 14.9% from 15.0%.

On a monthly basis, the number of young unemployed people fell by 98,000 in the EU and by 26,000 in the euro area. Compared with July 2025, it rose by 29,000 in the EU and by 40,000 in the euro area.

Unemployment Higher Among Women

According to Eurostat, the unemployment rate for women in the EU was 6.3% in July and 5.9% for men, with both remaining unchanged compared to the previous month. In the eurozone, unemployment among women stood at 6.6% and among men at 6.2%, also unchanged from June.

It should be noted that Eurostat clarifies that the estimates are based on the internationally used definition of unemployment by the International Labor Organization, according to which unemployed persons are defined as those who do not have a job, have actively sought employment in the past four weeks, and are available to start work within the next two weeks.
