The Englishman opened the scoring against Argentina, but within minutes, soccer gave way to memes, with users once again commenting on his striking resemblance to Princess Diana.

On the evening of July 15, as England faced Argentina in the semifinals of the 2026 World Cup, one of the most unexpected names began trending on X: that of Princess Diana.

“Princess Diana scored for England,” “The People’s Princess has come to save us,” and “Diana is with us” were just a few of the comments that appeared en masse on the platform. The occasion, of course, had no real connection to the British royal family. The star of the show was Anthony Gordon, who scored England’s only goal in their 2-1 loss to Argentina.
