The show “ALPHA News” with Katia Savva featured a special guest: Cypriot dancer Savvas Theodorou, known as Mr. Drepani.
He spoke about his effort to have the traditional Cypriot sickle listed in the Guinness World Records, through a unique project that combines traditional dance with skill and the promotion of Cyprus’s cultural heritage.
The record is for the highest throw and catch of a sickle, at a height of 5.7 meters. As he explained, the process was not simple, as he had to demonstrate his technique and meet the requirements set for him in order for this specific category to be officially recognized.
“It took place on January 6, 2025. My goal was to have our traditional sickle listed in the Guinness World Records. I demonstrated what I do—the dance and the moves—and they gave me some conditions. I met the conditions they set, and I managed to get it registered,” he confessed.
For him, the biggest challenge wasn’t simply achieving an impressive feat, but creating a new category that would bring international recognition to the traditional Cypriot sickle.
“This record is a brand-new one, because it didn’t exist before. That was the hardest part—because the goal wasn’t to break a record, but to create one. It took me 8 months to convince Guinness to include the traditional Cypriot sickle in the world record books. That, for me, is what matters most,” he said.
This effort, as his remarks indicate, held special significance for him, as his goal was to raise awareness of a traditional Cypriot folk art beyond the island’s borders.
His appearance on the show wasn’t limited to discussing the record, as Savvas Theodorou picked up the sickle and performed his signature dance moves on set, impressing Katia Savva and the TV audience.
