Port authorities remain on high alert, as migrant flows south of Crete have intensified significantly over the past 24 hours.
According to available data, from Tuesday through today, 574 people have been located and rescued in a total of nine incidents, reflecting the renewed surge in migrant activity.
Migrant traffic was particularly high yesterday, as 200 migrants were located and rescued in two consecutive operations in the sea area south of Kala Limena.
In the first operation, approximately 113 migrants were located in two small boats, 25 and 38 nautical miles south of Kala Limena. The boats were spotted by a Frontex unmanned aerial vehicle, and a rescue operation was carried out by Coast Guard patrol boats. Those rescued were safely transported to the port of Kala Limena.
Shortly thereafter, a second operation took place, during which another 87 migrants were located on two boats, approximately 21 nautical miles south and south-southeast of Kala Limena. In this case as well, Coast Guard patrol boats were deployed, which rescued the passengers and transported them to the port of Agia Galini.
