A detonator, drugs, and precision scales were found following the explosion in Kolonos

The white bag and the property manager's call to the police

Narcotics, precision scales, and an explosive device containing a detonator and a low-power explosive, were found at the site of the explosion in Kolonos, which injured two police officers and two civilians. In fact, one of the police officers, who opened the suspicious package, sustained more serious injuries and is being treated at the 401 Military Hospital. The findings suggest that the most likely scenario in this case is that it is purely a criminal matter involving drug trafficking, with extra “security measures” for the traffickers. The key question, however, is how and why the bag was left in the apartment building.

According to information obtained by protothema.gr, the evidence gathered so far indicates that the explosion was caused by a low-power explosive device connected to a detonator and placed inside a white bag.

The bag in question had been left on the ground floor of the apartment building on Platonos Street, where it was noticed by the building manager. The man called the Emergency Response Unit and reported the incident, believing that the bag likely contained drugs.

Police officers rushed to the scene, and when one of them opened the bag, the mechanism was triggered, causing an explosion.

The officer who opened the bag was transported to 401 Hospital, where he underwent surgery, while his colleague and the two civilians—including the manager—were taken to Evangelismos Hospital. No one’s life is in danger.

“We heard a loud bang; we thought there had been a car accident,” says an eyewitness
An eyewitness who owns a store in the area described the moments following the explosion in Kolonos to protothema.gr.

As he reported, the loud noise initially led him and his friends to believe that a car accident had occurred. When they went outside, they saw smoke, and a short time later they were informed that it was a bomb explosion.

“We were with my friends and we heard a loud bang and thought there had been a car crash. We went outside, saw smoke, and a little while later they told us it was a bomb,” he described.

According to him, the authorities responded immediately, as ambulances and police arrived on the scene within about five minutes. “The ambulances and the police arrived in five minutes. They said there were three injured; beyond that, I don’t know,” he added.

“They went to open a package and there was an explosion.”
Meanwhile, as a local resident told protothema.gr, he was in the apartment building when the explosion was heard, with those present initially believing that a car accident had occurred.

“I was here in the apartment building. We heard the bang and went downstairs to see if there had been a car crash,” he said.

“We saw a package. Someone went to open it—a police officer, from what we heard—and then the explosion happened,” she added.

According to her, the explosion occurred at the entrance to the apartment building, and searches of the surrounding area followed.
