An unprecedented incident involving a traffic police officer took place in Thessaloniki when, following a verbal altercation with a citizen over parking tickets, the officer allegedly removed his equipment, even leaving his service weapon on the side of the road. The incident was captured on a security camera in a nearby underground parking garage.

According to reports, it all began when a man, who was pulling out of a parking spot at the time, approached the officer, claiming that he was issuing tickets in the wrong spot on the street.

“You’re ticketing cars in the wrong spot,” he reportedly told the officer, pointing out that the no-stopping and no-parking zone applied to a different location. This remark provoked a strong reaction from the police officer, who, according to an eyewitness, replied: “What are you saying to me? Do you know who I am?”

Subsequently, as described, the police officer began removing his equipment, taking off his bulletproof vest, his baton, his belt, and his service weapon, and even took off his jacket. The items were left lying on the side of the road while the confrontation with the civilian continued, until the two men went their separate ways.

Footage from the security camera has been requested regarding the incident, and an Administrative Inquiry is expected to be conducted to investigate the circumstances under which the incident occurred. It is worth noting that no complaints regarding the incident were filed with the authorities.
