The two doctors who run the clinic in Kolonaki—where Giorgos Mazonakis allegedly suffered a cardiac arrest and died—were released shortly before midnight. The two doctors gave statements to the authorities, while the preliminary investigation continues, with the prosecutor’s office awaiting the medical examiner’s findings to clarify the circumstances of the death.

The internist, owner of the Stem Cell clinic in Kolonaki, and his wife, also a doctor, left the Kypseli Police Station shortly before midnight after completing their statements as part of the ongoing investigation.

According to the doctor’s attorney, Nikos Agapinos, the two doctors were provisionally released, while authorities are expected to continue gathering evidence, including statements from employees and an on-site inspection.

The doctor’s attorney emphasized that the forensic examination is the key factor in the case’s progress, as it must be determined whether there is any connection between the death of Giorgos Mazonakis and the medical procedure he underwent.

The doctor’s position: “No connection between the medical procedure and the incident”

According to reports, the prosecutor’s office requested that more evidence be gathered regarding both the circumstances of the singer’s death and the plasmapheresis procedure he underwent.

As reported, investigators are examining whether the procedure in question was performed in accordance with established protocols, as current regulations stipulate that plasmapheresis must be performed by a hematologist at a public hospital and not at a private clinic.

The owner’s wife, who is a gynecologist, reportedly described to the authorities the procedure followed during the medical treatment that Giorgos Mazonakis underwent.

For his part, the clinic’s owner, according to reports, denied any involvement in the incident, claiming that his wife had full control of the clinic, performed the treatments, and monitored the patients.

Their attorney, Mr. Nikos Agapinos, stated that the forensic report is what matters, emphasizing the presumption of innocence of his clients. “The question is whether there is any connection between the death of the well-known artist and any medical procedure that took place,” he said, adding that, according to his clients, there is no connection, and therefore no criminal liability. When asked if there is civil liability, he replied that this would require medical negligence, which he rejected. As he stated, the machines had been legally registered with the Athens Medical Association, and there is nothing illegal about them. According to him, the couple shares the same professional space, and the woman performing the treatments is an internist.

What Attorney Nikos Agapinos Said

Outside the Kypseli Police Station, the doctor’s defense attorney asked that there be no premature accusations of guilt before the investigations are completed.

“The doctors are already free to leave. They’re simply waiting for the testimony of both employees to be completed. An on-site inspection will also be conducted. But what is important, as I have told you, is the forensic examination and the forensic findings,” he said.

Mr. Agapinos emphasized that the presumption of innocence must be respected, noting: “Anyone who is in a hurry should not rush to judgment. Just as no one can acquit someone prematurely, no one can convict people prematurely—especially those with a scientific career.”

Referring to the preliminary investigation, he argued that the forensic examination will determine whether there is any connection between the artist’s death and medical treatment.

“A preliminary examination is currently underway. The forensic examination will determine whether there is any connection between the death of the well-known artist and the specific medical procedure that took place. If there is no such connection—and our position is that there is no connection between the two—then there is essentially no criminal liability,” he stated.

“The machines have been legally registered”

Earlier, upon arriving at the Security Division, Nikos Agapinos, the attorney for Dr. Ilias Theodoropoulos and his wife, stated outside the Kypseli police station: “Ilias Theodoropoulos and his wife are personal friends of mine. The singer was a patient of his wife. They are giving their statements, and a forensic medical examination must be conducted. I believe this is a coincidental incident that remains to be proven. These specific machines have been registered with the medical association by my law firm. We’re talking about a completely legitimate medical practice with all the equipment properly registered.”

The Security Division has taken over the investigation

It should be noted that the Athens Security Sub-Directorate has been tasked with investigating and compiling the case file regarding the death of Giorgos Mazonakis. The Organized Crime Division (the Greek FBI) is also expected to assist in the investigation to determine whether any criminal acts were committed. The first person summoned to testify is the doctor who owns the clinic where the singer suffered a cardiac arrest.

As part of the investigation, statements are expected to be taken from all individuals who had contact with the singer, both before he arrived at the clinic and while he was there, as well as subsequently at Elpis Hospital. The case file will include the records of the medical procedures performed, as well as the expected forensic medical report following the autopsy.
