Relatives of the victims who lost their lives in the explosion and building collapse that occurred the day before yesterday are expected to go to the Athens Medical Examiner’s Office, Friday, in Plaka.
The victims’ families have arrived in Greece, having been summoned by the relevant authorities, and are expected to visit, possibly on Monday, at the Athens Medical Examiner’s Office to provide genetic material for DNA comparison and to complete the process of identifying and verifying the remains.
Meanwhile, investigations by the Arson Crimes Division remain in full swing to determine the causes of the tragedy in which six people lost their lives. For the third day, a team from the Directorate consisting of ten specialized officers has been conducting on-site inspections and thorough examinations, collecting and evaluating every piece of evidence that may help determine the circumstances of the tragedy.
Construction equipment from the City of Athens has removed nearly all building materials from the building’s rubble, a process expected to be completed on Sunday. The materials are then transported to a specially designated area provided by the City of Athens, where specialized personnel from the Athens Fire Department (DAEE) and appointed experts are on site to examine them.
The investigations by the relevant authorities into the causes of the explosion are focusing on the second-floor apartment where the elderly couple lived, as, according to the evidence so far, there is strong evidence that the explosion occurred there.
According to information from relevant sources, that particular apartment was the only one with a natural gas supply, which was used for the stove, the fireplace, and a burner. However, as noted, everything must be documented in order to determine whether the explosion was caused by a natural gas leak.
Specialized personnel from the DAEE are surveying the site, examining the sequence of events leading to the explosion, the fire, and the collapse of the building.
It should be noted that the preliminary investigation is being conducted under the direction of the competent Athens Public Prosecutor’s Office and in cooperation with other relevant units of the Hellenic Police.
