The clock is now ticking down to the issuance of the ruling that will decide the issue of lifting telephone privacy in the context of the preliminary investigation into the death of Giorgos Mazonakis. According to reports, the relevant ruling by the Athens Criminal Court of First Instance is expected to be issued within the week, while the prosecutor in charge has already come out in favor of lifting the confidentiality, which was requested in a formal motion by the 32nd regular investigating judge handling the case.
The aim is to use the lifting of communications secrecy to ascertain the defendants’ actions before and after the singer’s death.
Who is affected by the lifting of confidentiality?
Specifically, according to reports, the investigator requested the lifting of confidentiality for six mobile phones, a hard drive, and a USB drive. According to the same reports, these are digital devices that were seized during the police search of the medical office on Karneadou Street, where the popular singer suffered a cardiac arrest on September 9.
The cell phones that were seized belong to Giorgos Mazonakis, the two accused doctors, two secretaries, and a nurse who work at the clinic.
The investigating judge handling the case even requested that the seizure be lifted for the maximum period allowed by law, namely from July 11, 2026, until the day after the singer’s death, that is, September 10. The final decision now rests with the Athens Misdemeanor Court, based on the ruling it will issue.
