The corruption scandal in Greek basketball is taking on new dimensions, and the arrest of Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK) President Vangelis Liolios as the case file includes messages and evidence of possible match-fixing across all levels of the sport over the past decade.
Specifically, messages and evidence indicating “match-fixing” across all divisions—from youth and school leagues to the First Division—spanning from 2016 to 2026 are included in the case file on corruption in Greek basketball.
The same sources report that approximately 50 games are under investigation, including one international match.
Meanwhile, during the investigations, a large sum of money—amounting to 800,000 euros—was reportedly found on one of the arrested individuals, though it appears to be of unexplained origin.
The domino effect of serious developments in the world of basketball was triggered by a complaint filed by the Amarousio Basketball Club in April 2026, which concerned the operations of the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK) and its president, Evangelos Liolios.
According to reports, this was followed by complaints and testimony from eight witnesses, two of whom are considered extremely important because they have knowledge of match-fixing.
The two witnesses appear to have been bribed in the past, however, they will not face criminal charges since they came forward voluntarily to report what they knew about the illegal activities in the world of basketball.
