Shocking revelations are coming to light regarding the murder of 45-year-old Stavroula Leventaki in Chania, after her body was found in a rural area in the Vatolakos region.
The body was found buried at the location indicated to police by the 43-year-old confessed perpetrator, who reportedly confessed to the crime after hours of questioning.
According to the information contained in the case file, the victim was found bound with plastic zip ties and gagged with electrical tape, a fact that underscores the brutality of the attack she suffered.
What the 43-year-old claims about the crime
The 43-year-old man from Skopje reportedly claimed that the crime took place on May 30 following a heated argument inside house where he was living as a tenant of the 45-year-old woman. According to his claims, the two had previously been in a romantic relationship, and on that day, Stavroula asked him to resume their romantic relationship, which he refused.
As he claimed, the conversation escalated into an argument, during which the woman threatened to tell his wife about their relationship. The tension escalated and, according to his confession, he initially struck her with a glass beer bottle.
Then, as the 45-year-old woman screamed for help, he covered her mouth, even using electrical tape, and later stabbed her twice near the heart.
After the murder, the 43-year-old allegedly tied up her body with plastic ties, wrapped it in bags, and left it inside the house.
The next morning, he transported the body in the small van he used to a field he owned in Vatolakko, about five kilometers from the crime scene. There, he dug a hole and buried her, trying to cover up all traces.
The Attempt to Mislead the Authorities
Police authorities believe that the perpetrator then attempted to mislead the investigation and portray the case as a robbery. According to evidence gathered by investigators, he made cash withdrawals from the 45-year-old woman’s bank accounts and later handed her cards over to another foreign man, having even written the PIN codes on them.
The second man is alleged to have made withdrawals from ATMs in the area in the days that followed, though there is no evidence so far of his involvement in the murder.
On the contrary, authorities believe that the 43-year-old used these actions to create confusion and divert suspicion away from himself.
The evidence gathered by officers from the Chania Sub-Directorate for Crime Prevention and Investigation played a decisive role in solving the case, as well as the analysis of the 45-year-old woman’s bank transactions.
When the authorities presented the 43-year-old with the evidence they had gathered, he reportedly broke down and confessed, ultimately pointing out the spot where he had buried the remains of Stavroula Leventaki.
