Former minister Stefanos Manos, who had been dealing with health issues in recent years, has passed away at the age of 87. The news of the former minister’s death—who served in New Democracy governments—was confirmed in an online post by his close associate, Aristotelis Aivaliotis. Stefanos Manos had a long political career spanning more than three decades, during which, among other things, he served as Minister of the Environment, as well as Minister of National Economy and Finance, and was a founder of the Liberals and a co-founder of “Drasi.”

He was married and the father of five children.

He was born in Athens in December 1939, studied mechanical engineering with a specialization in aerodynamics at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich and subsequently earned an MBA from Harvard University. He entered politics in 1977 when he was elected to the Second Athens for the New Democracy party in the elections that same year and served as Deputy Minister of Public Works in the government of Konstantinos Karamanlis. In the years that followed, he held a series of government posts, and in the government of Konstantinos Mitsotakis, he served as Minister of the Environment, Spatial Planning, and Public Works, as well as Minister of National Economy and Finance.

In 1998, he was expelled from New Democracy, and in April 1999, he founded the Liberal Party, with a bull as its emblem, which received 1.62% of the vote in the European elections that same year. In the 2000 elections, he collaborated with New Democracy, while in the 2004 elections, he collaborated with PASOK.

Stefanos Manos made a name for himself through his initiatives in urban planning, environmental protection, and the daily life of cities. During his tenure, he promoted the protection of hundreds of traditional settlements, while stricter environmental regulations and fines for polluting industries were enacted.

His intervention in Plaka is considered a landmark, where he promoted pedestrianization and the removal of nightlife venues. Additionally, during his tenure, pedestrianization projects were carried out in Athens and bus lanes were promoted. Stefanos Manos was honored by the French Republic with the title of Knight of the Legion of Honor.
