Greek author and philosopher Stelios Ramfos has passed away at the age of 87. Rampos was one of the country’s most prominent intellectuals, frequently contributing to public discourse.
Born in Athens in 1939, he studied at the Law School of the University of Athens, and in 1965 he traveled to Paris, where he continued his studies in philosophy. From 1969 to 1974, he taught at the University of Vincennes before returning to Greece, where he settled permanently.
He was a prolific writer, with a body of work spanning more than five decades and comprising over 30 books and studies. At the center of his thought were philosophy, religion, psychology, history, and, in particular, Greek identity. A large part of his work was devoted to interpreting Hellenism and understanding how Byzantium and the Orthodox tradition influenced the formation of modern Greek consciousness.
