The two doctors, Ilias Theodoropoulos and Ioanna Gaka, who now face a serious felony charge, are expected to present their own arguments regarding the circumstances under which the incident that led to the death of Giorgos Mazonakis occurred.
The doctor, for her part, is reportedly attempting to explain the contradictions found in her initial statements, attributing them to the state of panic that, she claims, prevailed after the singer collapsed. In any case, according to reports, she denies that there was any malice in the way she handled the incident.

Her husband, who is also a doctor, reportedly maintains that he had no involvement in the incident in question. According to his account, he had three other appointments with patients that day, and at the time in question, he had left to go to lunch. As he reportedly claims, he was informed of the incident while he was away from the clinic.
The couple’s initial statements were given when the two doctors were acting as witnesses. However, after criminal charges were filed against them, their status in the case changed, and they are now required to provide explanations as defendants.
The doctors’ departure from Evelpidon:
Another significant element in the case is the fact that, according to reports, the forensic report from today’s autopsy has not yet been included in the case file, while all available evidence is expected to be evaluated in order to clarify the exact causes and circumstances of the death.
Meanwhile, the two defendants reportedly maintain that the machines used in the clinic had been registered with the Athens Medical Association. According to the same information, the first machine was reported in 2025 and was followed by an inspection by the Athens Medical Association, while the second was reported in 2026. In fact, a new autopsy by the Athens Medical Association was reportedly scheduled to take place at the clinic during that specific time period.
Conversely, according to reports, the family of Giorgos Mazonakis has already submitted requests for specific investigative measures to be carried out. These include lifting the telephone confidentiality order, transcribing the call to the National Ambulance Service (EKAV), and producing the singer’s medical records.
According to the same sources, the family is also expected to request that the charge be upgraded to manslaughter with possible intent.
The plasmapheresis
machine was in operation for 42 minutes. According to reports, the evidence in the case so far links the charge of fatal exposure to the manner in which the medical procedure of plasmapheresis allegedly unfolded, for which George Mazonakis had visited the clinic in question.
According to the evidence gathered, the procedure had reportedly already begun when the singer suffered cardiac arrest, while the machine was reportedly in operation for approximately 42 minutes.
At the same time, according to what the doctor who performed the test reportedly stated, Giorgos Mazonakis was in poor condition. The critical question under investigation is why, if his health condition was indeed critical, the procedure was not halted and he was not immediately transported to a hospital.
In the same context, investigators are also examining whether that particular clinic was equipped to perform such medical procedures. According to expert testimony included in the investigation, such procedures should be performed in a hospital setting.
Answers to the above questions are expected to emerge from the interrogation, the forensic examinations, George Mazonakis’s medical records, the testimonies of those involved and the experts, as well as from the investigative measures requested by the family.
Doctors
to Appear in Court on Monday Earlier, the Athens First Instance Prosecutor’s Office filed extremely serious criminal charges against the two doctors for negligence resulting in death through complicity, a felony offense.
Following the filing of the charges, the two defendants were brought before the competent investigating judge and were given a deadline to prepare their defenses. According to reports, their hearing has been scheduled for next Monday, September 14, and they will remain in custody until then.
Cause of Singer’s
Collapse Remains Unclear Meanwhile, the cause of Giorgos Mazonakis’s death remains undetermined, according to the initial assessment by the medical examiners who examined the singer’s body.
As protothema.gr reported earlier, the forensic examination did not reach a clear conclusion regarding the causes that led to his death. The results of the toxicological and histological tests are expected to shed more light on the matter.
