Released pending the completion of the preliminary investigation, the owner of the beach bar in Paros, who was arrested following the death of a 4-year-old in the establishment’s pool, was released by order of the Syros Public Prosecutor.
The business owner, who was also registered as a lifeguard at the pool, was arrested by the authorities and, like the child’s parents, faces a charge of negligent homicide. He appeared before the Syros prosecutor today, Sunday (August 9), and was released, according to ERT.
The parents of the 4-year-old, who were also arrested following the tragedy, were released on Saturday evening after the required procedures were completed.
How the tragedy unfolded
The incident occurred shortly after 3:00 p.m. on Saturday at the pool of a seaside resort in the Pounta area.
According to information available so far, the four-year-old boy was found unconscious in the water, while his parents were also at the resort but in a different area from the pool.
Two women who were at the scene reportedly were the first to notice the child in the water. A rapid response followed, and an employee of the beach bar, who works as a bartender, entered the pool and pulled the four-year-old out.
Resuscitation efforts began immediately on the spot, and according to the latest reports, a doctor was also present and assisted until the paramedics arrived.
The child was transported by ambulance to the Health Center, with resuscitation efforts continuing both during transport and after his arrival. Despite the efforts of the lifeguards and doctors, it was not possible to revive him, and he was pronounced dead.
The lifeguard’s presence is under scrutiny
A critical part of the investigation now centers on the supervision of the pool at the time of the tragedy. Authorities are attempting to determine how the 4-year-old child wandered away from where his parents were and reached the pool without being noticed in time. At the same time, they are investigating whether all required safety measures were in place at the facility.
Of particular significance is the fact that the owner himself was registered as the pool’s lifeguard. The relevant authorities are investigating whether he was on duty at the time of the incident and under what exact conditions the supervision of swimmers was being carried out. According to reports, there are two interconnected pools on the premises, a detail that is also being examined as part of the investigation into the circumstances of the accident.
