Those who have been called up to report for duty with the 2026 C ESSO (late August through early September 2026), provided they do not receive a deferment for educational reasons, in accordance with the new legislative framework for the conscription of Greek citizens provided for in Law 5265/2026.
This regulation is being implemented for the first time and applies to those born between January 1 and May 15, 2008.
According to Article 246 of Law 5265/2026, which was enacted as an incentive to fulfill military obligations at a younger age, provision is made for permanent discharge after completing nine (9) months of active military service for privates subject to full primary military service who enlist and fulfill their entire obligation upon the initial call-up of their class, that is, who do not take a deferment and report for duty when called.
What applies to those who want to pursue higher education
At the same time, the new framework also provides for changes for all those who wish to continue their studies.
Those who are called up under the 2026 C ESSO and choose to continue their studies at a college or university may, if they so desire, request a deferral of enlistment as prospective students.
This option is provided for in Article 188 of Law 5265/2026.
The resulting change is that the applicant does not need to have already enrolled in the institution; rather, in this case, it is sufficient to submit the required supporting documents demonstrating that they are eligible to participate in the relevant admission or enrollment process.
