A 72-year-old man gives the gift of “sight” through a cornea donation in Thessaloniki

The retrieval of the grafts was successfully completed

Up to four patients will regain their sight, thanks to the cornea donation from a 72-year-old man who was being treated in the First Intensive Care Unit of the “Georgios Papanikolaou” General Hospital of Thessaloniki “Georgios Papanikolaou” and passed away last Monday.

Corneal donation after death can offer people with severe vision problems the chance to regain their sight. It should be noted that two corneas from a single donor can benefit four recipients, since different parts of each cornea can now be used for different types of transplants.

The corneas were successfully harvested by a specialized surgical team from the Ophthalmology Clinic at Papageorgiou General Hospital. The grafts were immediately transported to the Corneal Graft Bank at AHEPA University Hospital, as part of a coordinated operation by the Hellenic Transplant Organization, with the assistance of EKAB.
