Greek authorities are continuing their investigation to identify the perpetrators of the attacks involving explosive devices on the homes of New Democracy officials in Thessaloniki.
The investigations are focusing on DNA evidence and other pieces of evidence, while witness statements and video footage reinforce the assessment that a fourth person was present alongside the bombers, playing a supporting role.
At the same time, the Counterterrorism Unit’s investigations are centered on three main areas. These include remnants of the incendiary devices—specifically, pieces of electrical tape, gas canisters, and plastic containers—where investigators are searching for DNA and fingerprints.
“Essentially, this wiring configuration is the simplest one we’ve encountered, so we can’t glean any evidence from it. The police do not expect anyone to claim responsibility, given that there have been deaths and injuries among others,” said Konstantia Dimoglidou, spokesperson for the Hellenic Police.
Video footage from the attacks
The video footage from the attacks is considered crucial, as authorities are working to identify the individuals who participated in the attacks as well as the vehicles used.
“We only have silhouettes from the video footage. Certainly, the police do not believe that only the at least three individuals who definitely participated in the attacks were involved, if we’re talking about the same people,” added Ms. Dimoglidou.
Video Evidence
Yesterday, video footage that was made public shows the moment when one of the perpetrators places the explosive device outside the apartment building where Savvas Anastasiadis lives, in Toumba.
In the video, the perpetrator, who is dressed in black and wearing jeans, with his face covered by a hood, appears to be holding a bag in his left hand and walking briskly to place it in front of the entrance to the apartment building at 45 Tsiapanou Street.
The bomb was planted at 3:57 a.m., and the explosion occurred at 4:24 a.m., marking the second in a series of three explosions.
