The Lesvos Primary Sector Association expresses its deep sorrow over the death of a livestock farmer on Lesvos.
In a statement, the Association reports that the unfortunate man died shortly after his herd was culled due to foot-and-mouth disease. They also note that the farmer was in good health, and that the herd that was culled was a fundamental part of his life and daily routine.
“His flock was his life. His hard work. His livelihood. His daily life,” the statement notes, with the Agency adding that the man struggled to cope with the loss of his animals.
The full statement reads:
“Today, Lesbos mourns a livestock farmer.
A short while ago, we learned with deep sorrow that a man, who had been in good health, passed away after his herd was culled due to foot-and-mouth disease.
His herd was his life.
His hard work. His livelihood. His daily life.
And when they took them away from him, he couldn’t cope.
We cannot know exactly what happened, and we will not be the ones to pass judgment.
But we can say one thing very clearly:
Behind every animal that is slaughtered, there is a person.
And the state has a duty to protect that person, to support them, and not to leave them alone to face this tragedy.
Today’s loss brings immense sorrow, but also raises serious questions.
Responsibility, where it lies, must be sought out and assigned. Without fear, without cover-ups, and without losing sight of the human dimension of this tragedy.
It wasn’t just a flock that was lost.
A human being was lost.
The Pallesvia Primary Sector Association extends its heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.
“May you rest in peace, Panagiotis.”
