An explosion occurred in a building in Kolonos, on Platonos Street, at noon on Wednesday (October 21). Two police officers were injured; one suffered a head injury, though fortunately his life is not in danger, and two civilians sustained minor injuries. The officer with the more serious injuries has been transported to 401 Hospital, and the other three to Evangelismos Hospital.
According to information available so far, the explosion occurred at the entrance to an apartment building. An unknown person had called the Emergency Response Unit to report a suspected drug-related incident.
However, when the police officers arrived at the entrance of the apartment building—where, according to the report, a suitcase containing drugs was located, which the anonymous caller was supposed to hand over— the suitcase exploded, seriously injuring the police officer and slightly injuring one of the three bystanders.
Eighteen firefighters with six vehicles are on the scene, and police forces were also present. The police are investigating the case with the utmost seriousness, initially seeking to identify the person who called the Emergency Response Center in order to determine their motives. At this time, the possibility that this was a trap intended to target police officers cannot be ruled out.
