An alarm was raised early Monday morning at the fire department regarding a fire that broke out in a café located on the ground floor of an apartment building in Nea Ionia.
The fire at the café on Kastamonis Street quickly spread and engulfed the three floors above it.
According to eyewitness accounts, an explosion was heard coming from the ground floor of the building before the fire broke out, with fire department officials investigating whether it was caused by a propane tank or arson.
The 18 firefighters who rushed to the scene with five vehicles and a special ladder truck had to rescue several people from the building.

It should be noted that the café where the fire broke out was the scene of a deadly shooting in February 2023 that left one person dead.
At that time, a 37-year-old man of Albanian descent was killed after being fatally wounded by shots fired by a fellow Albanian following an altercation with other Albanians.
