Today, her family, friends, and the political community are saying their final “goodbye” to Margarita Papandreou, who passed away at the ripe old age of 103 on September 18.

Margarita Papandreou passed away at the age of 103. She was a writer, an activist, and was closely associated with the Greek women’s movement.

Wreaths were sent by, among others, Nikitas Kaklamanis, Nikos Androulakis, Haris Doukas, SYRIZA, Thanasis Kontogiorgis, Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister, the family of Thanasis Tsouras, the Women’s Union of Greece, and Yannis Panagopoulos, president of the General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE).

Condolences from politicians and officials to George Papandreou

George Papandreou has received numerous personal messages and phone calls from Greek and European politicians, institutional figures, and officials following the death of his mother, Margarita Papandreou, according to a statement from the former prime minister’s press office.

Among them are President of the Republic Konstantinos Tasoulas, Speaker of the Hellenic Parliament Nikitas Kaklamanis, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, the Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, and many other European officials.

Condolences and personal messages were also sent by PASOK President Nikos Androulakis, Alexis Tsipras, Antonis Samaras, Nikos Dendias, Lina Mendoni, Dora Bakoyannis, Kostas Bakoyannis, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, and Haris Doukas, as well as former and current ministers, members of parliament, and PASOK officials.

Special mention is made of the messages received from women in Cyprus and Turkey, who, as noted, recognize Margarita Papandreou’s enduring contribution to the struggles for women’s rights, peace, and democracy.

According to George Papandreou’s press office, the messages come from a wide range of political and institutional figures in Greece and abroad.

Margarita Papandreou’s family bid her farewell with a touching statement.

Her children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter spoke about their mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, describing her as “a fighter to the end” and noting that she lived with generosity, dignity, and faith in humanity, justice, peace, and women’s equality.

At the same time, they bid her farewell as the “big, warm embrace” that united the family and gave it love and strength.

“It is with deep sorrow that we bid farewell to Margarita Papandreou, our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who passed away this morning.

A fighter to the very end, she lived with generosity, dignity, and a deep faith in humanity, justice, peace, and women’s

equality. To us, her children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter, above all, she will always be our Margarita: the warm, loving embrace that united us and gave us boundless love and strength.”
