New testimony, this time from the secretary at the Karneadou clinic, reveals that Ioanna Gaka, the doctor accused in the case of Giorgos Mazonakis’s death last year, had administered alcohol to at least three patients, including her own daughter, on whom she performed phlebotomy.
“I was in the group chat—in that group chat, the nurses were coordinating who would go, on which day and at what time. As far as I recall, she had administered some IV fluids that week while we were still away on vacation. She didn’t use IV fluids often, though this had happened in the past. Rarely, yes, but it did happen. If I recall correctly, from what I’d overheard—without actually seeing it—there were 3 or 4 such instances in the past year,” she says characteristically.

For her part, Ioanna Gaka testified before the investigating judge that she, too, had used the plasmapheresis machine both on herself and on her daughter.
Regarding the administration of the anesthetic, experts explain that it is a safe medication provided it is administered in the correct doses, to appropriately selected patients, and respiratory support is available, as this is the main concern when it is administered.
According to STAR, the question that arises is who supplied the substances—specifically propofol—to the doctor. In any case, intoxication could aggravate the charges against the accused doctor, which is expected to pit her against her husband.
Theodoropoulos Faces Off Against His Wife
As protothema reported earlier, rapid developments in the case of Giorgos Mazonakis’s death appear to be shifting the balance between the couple of doctors in pretrial detention, Ioanna Gaka and Ilias Theodoropoulos. According to sources close to Theodoropoulos, his relationship with his wife appears to have now broken down.
According to the same sources, the doctor’s side maintains that, following the evidence that has emerged from the authorities’ investigation, he is keeping a clear distance from his wife and from whatever has allegedly been documented regarding the administration of intoxicating substances.
Particular mention is made of evidence reportedly obtained through the lifting of communications secrecy. According to the same information, in a group chat on Viber, in which clinic employees participated, a message was sent on August 26, 2026, referring to the administration of intoxicants and bloodletting by the defendant Ioanna Gaka on her daughter.
This is a detail that, according to her husband’s side, he was unaware of and which, if confirmed by the investigation, would lead him to completely distance himself from her.
In fact, according to sources close to the detained doctor, it is not out of the question that he will make a public statement on the matter, expressing his disagreement and opposition.
At the same time, Ilias Theodoropoulos maintains that the process of lifting attorney-client privilege did not reveal any communication between him and Giorgos Mazonakis.
Meanwhile, there have also been developments regarding the witnesses. According to the doctor’s defense team, a request was granted to summon three individuals who have not yet testified and whom they believe can provide evidence in the case.
Among them is the couple’s daughter, a patient who, according to the defendant’s side, was with him before he went to the restaurant, as well as an employee at the second clinic on Patriarch Ioakeim Street.
The defense team for the accused doctor is now awaiting the evaluation of this specific evidence and the testimonies of the new witnesses, while the issue of intoxication remains one of the key points at the center of the investigation.
