Mourning is deep in Paleokomi, Serres, following the tragic car accident that claimed the lives of a 46-year-old mother and her 21-year-old son, who lost their lives on Friday morning (August 8) on the Amphipolis–Drama highway, near Paleokomi.
The 46-year-old woman and her 21-year-old son, originally from Albania and permanent residents of Paleokomi, worked at the same company, based in Paralia Ofriniou. On Friday morning, they had set out for work when, at approximately 7:30 a.m., the fatal collision occurred.

The car they were riding in collided head-on with a truck under circumstances that are currently under investigation.
The collision was particularly violent, resulting in the immediate deaths of the mother and her son, who was also the driver of the car. The truck driver, on the other hand, sustained minor injuries and was transported to the General Hospital of Drama. According to the information available so far, his life is not in danger.

The footage recorded by the truck’s camera is considered crucial to the investigation, as it captures the final moments before the fatal collision. The footage is expected to shed more light on the car’s path and the sequence of events that led to the head-on collision.
What the initial evidence reveals about the collision
Meanwhile, Georgios Karydas, an expert witness and traffic accident analyst based in Serres, speaking to protothema.gr.
“The passenger car, it appears, was traveling at high speed, well above the speed limits for that particular road. The light truck was traveling normally in its lane,” Mr. Karydas noted initially. He continued: “The video clearly shows that the driver of the passenger car lost control of his vehicle, veered into oncoming traffic, and inevitably collided head-on with the truck.”
Regarding the factors that, in his assessment, led to the loss of control, Mr. Karydas notes:
“The main cause of the loss of control of the vehicle is high speed, which, combined with the shape of the road at that specific point—which is curved— and due to the phenomenon of centrifugal force, the vehicle veered outward and into oncoming traffic, resulting in the tragic accident.”
The Traffic Police’s investigation is ongoing to fully clarify all the circumstances of the accident.
