A summer storm struck the wider Mani region on Saturday afternoon, the Feast of the Assumption, causing severe problems in Alypa, Kokkala, and Oitylo. According to Health Minister Adonis Georgiadis, a woman was seriously injured by a lightning strike in Oitylo while she was inside her car.
The woman was picked up by an EKAB ambulance and transported to the hospital in Sparta.

The torrential rain was particularly heavy, and within a short time the streets turned into raging torrents, with large amounts of water pooling on the roads. The intensity of the rainfall also caused flooding in homes and accommodations throughout the area. In several places, the water reached the windows, causing it to seep into some buildings and creating problems for residents and visitors.
The areas affected by the heavy rainfall were primarily Oitylo, Neo Oitylo, Alypa, Kokkala, and Exo Nymfio. In statements to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA-MPA), Deputy Mayor Georgia Lyrofoni also noted that Karavostasi, Limeni, and Portokagio were affected.
Since approximately 4:30 p.m., the Fire Department has received about 50 calls for assistance regarding homes and vehicles in the wider area of Eastern Mani, and so far, efforts have been made to transport 10 people from their cars to a safe location.
Notable are the images from the main road in Alypa, which within a few minutes turned into a torrent as the water rushed down with great force. The situation was similar in Kokkala, where approximately 110 metric tons of rain fell per stremma, as well as in Oitylo.
Traffic has been blocked in many parts of the road network by debris.
As the deputy mayor added, heavy equipment is expected to begin restoration work, followed by a full assessment of the damage in the area.
