The president of POEDIN, Michalis Giannakos, claiming that an 87-year-old patient attacked doctors and a nurse at Lemnos Hospital, resulting in their injuries and the hospitalization of one doctor in the hospital’s Internal Medicine Department.
According to Mr. Giannakos, the incident began last Thursday morning, when the 87-year-old visited the hospital due to constipation. The doctors examined him and recommended that he be admitted to the Short-Term Care Unit to address his health issue, but he refused and left.
According to the president of POEDIN, the elderly man returned on Friday morning to the outpatient clinic waiting area, where he began shouting and swearing. A rural doctor came out of the examination room and asked him, according to the complaint, not to cause a disturbance.
According to him, when the doctor attempted to return to the examination room, the 87-year-old grabbed her by the hair and neck, threw her to the ground, and began punching and kicking her all over her body.
In their attempt to help her, a second doctor and a nurse were also attacked. According to the complaint, the second doctor was kicked, while the nurse was shoved and struck by the elderly man.
The doctor who suffered the most severe attack sustained injuries all over her body and had to be admitted to the Internal Medicine Clinic at Lemnos Hospital.
In light of the incident, the president of POEDIN raised the issue of healthcare workers’ safety once again, emphasizing that the hospital lacks adequate security and calling for measures to protect staff from acts of violence.
