A 12-year-old girl in Pyrgos, Elis, experienced a nightmare when, according to her mother’s account, Roma women chased her down the street and threw stones and bottles at her.
According to the minor’s mother, who filed the complaint with patrisnews.com, the chase and attack on her daughter occurred because she is accused of being involved in a fatal traffic accident on September 7 in the Lampeti area, in which a 17-year-old Romani boy lost his life.
She, however, maintains that she has absolutely no connection to the accident, that she was not driving, that she does not even own a car, that she was not at the scene, and that she had no involvement whatsoever.
“Mom, they’re chasing me”
The incident involving the 12-year-old occurred after the blessing ceremony, after she had stopped by her mother’s workplace to tell her she was heading home. A few minutes later, the 12-year-old’s mother received a call, and, as she described it, “she was sobbing uncontrollably. She couldn’t speak. She was shouting at me to come quickly because they were chasing her to kill her.”
According to the complaint filed by the student’s mother, the 12-year-old had been followed by four Romani women who were close relatives of a 17-year-old boy who lost his life in a car accident on September 7 in Lampeti.
As the mother describes, when her daughter saw the four women dressed in black—because she is afraid of Roma people—“she would cross to the other side of the street to get away, and they would follow her. She would go one way, and they would follow her. She would go the other way, and they would follow her again.”
Then the girl started running “to save herself. She was screaming for help. She was alone on the street, trying to find somewhere to take cover,” while they threw rocks, bottles, and shards of glass at her.
Threats Against the Mother
The girl managed to reach a local business and ask for help. “When I arrived, all I cared about was finding my child. To make sure she was okay,” her mother says, adding that a woman approached her and said, “You’re the one who killed my brother.”
“I told them I don’t drive, that I had nothing to do with the accident, that I wasn’t even there. I told them they had the wrong person,” but she was unable to convince the Roma women, who, as she claims, “told me: ‘Now you’ll see what it’s like to have your child killed. We’re going to kill your daughter.’”
“They told me they know where I live. That they know I have children, that I have dogs. They told me they’d kill my children first to make me suffer, and then me. That they’d burn us alive inside the house. Since then, I haven’t been able to sleep like I used to. I look at my children and wonder if I can protect them,” adds the 12-year-old’s mother.
After filing a complaint with the police, the four Romani women were brought before a court, which sentenced them to two months in prison, suspended for 15 months. However, the woman decided to leave her home: “I took my children and we went somewhere else. I didn’t feel safe. What I want to know is who gave out my information. Who said that I was having an affair? Why did someone single me and my children out?”
