A commotion broke out at noon on Saturday, July 18, in Argos Orestiko, when a 52-year-old driver, who was under the influence of alcohol, drove his car into the compound of the 574th Motorized Infantry Battalion, triggering an alarm and endangering military personnel.
According to ERT, the vehicle was speeding toward the military unit and, instead of slowing down, continued on its course, crashing violently into the camp’s main gate. The collision destroyed the steel security barrier, and the car entered the camp’s courtyard. Unit personnel who were on duty at the time managed to get out of the way in time, avoiding injury.
Following the incident, an alarm was immediately sounded, and officers from the local police station rushed to the scene. The 52-year-old man was subdued and taken to the station, where it was determined that he was under the influence of alcohol.
He was charged with the offenses provided for by law, while the relevant authorities are investigating the exact circumstances under which the incident occurred.
According to ERT, after the initial shock, there was no shortage of humorous comments from bystanders, who joked that “he probably missed the guard post and wanted to do his military service all over again.”
