New tensions arose last night at the guarded, closed temporary shelter for asylum seekers in the “Kleidi” area of the Municipality of Sintiki, in Serres.
According to the police, at around 10 p.m., a group of migrants threw stones at police officers and attempted to damage the facility’s perimeter fence. A section of the fence appears to have collapsed, and damage was also caused to electrical installations, according to information from the Hellenic Police.
Police forces intervened, and the situation was brought under control within a short period of time. A headcount revealed that none of the residents were missing, and so far, a 22-year-old Egyptian man has been arrested; he is alleged to have instigated the incidents.
Yesterday’s incident follows the disturbances that occurred last Saturday night at the same facility. At that time, 23 people were arrested and sentenced by the Serres Single-Judge Misdemeanor Court to prison terms of up to 26 months. All were sent to correctional facilities, as it was decided that the sentences would be served concurrently (the same case file includes two additional individuals).
During those incidents, 15 people escaped, 13 of whom are still at large.
There are 340 migrants residing in this facility, the majority of whom are from Egypt and Bangladesh.
